We offer one or two unpaid, part-time internships every semester, including the summer semester. Interns are responsible for reading the manuscripts submitted to our agency (primarily women's fiction and romance novels) and recommending to Elaine English whether we should represent each work. Our interns are also the driving force behind our agency blog (see our intern posts on the Elaine English blog), and also handle some administrative tasks (including responding to routine correspondence, filing, database management, etc.). While your schedule will be flexible, interns must be able to come into our office at least a few hours per week and be able to do the rest of their work remotely (via a computer with internet access). We look for people who love literature, read avidly, have advanced writing and analytical skills and can utilize those skills to evaluate commercial fiction manuscripts. Please note on your resume or cover letter any experience you have with creative writing, peer review, editing, or with the publishing industry in general. While the positions are unpaid, we have worked with local colleges and universities to ensure that interns received course credit. We are very generous with references and networking assistance in the publishing industry for those who successfully complete the internship. Our office is accessible via metro rail or bus and is located within a couple of blocks of the Tenleytown/American University station (red line). If you would like to apply, please send a resume and a 2-3 paragraph cover letter explaining why you are interested in interning with us and why you are the ideal candidate for the position to Elaine English at elaine@elaineenglish.com. |
